A dejected, barefoot Steve Prefontaine after placing 4th in the 5000m final of the 1972 Munich Olympics.
This cropped photo is from a lo-res image of a poignant photo taken by Rich Clarkson, a preeminent sports photographer. This is a grainy black and white copy of a color photo posted on his web page (link below) along those of other notable Olympic athletes. His photography s remarkable!

“Success isn’t how far you got, but the distance you traveled from where you started.” — Steve Prefontaine.

First Ever Hand Made, Nike Waffle Trainer. A legendary icon in not just the running world, but the whole world. Bowerman had Steve Prefontaine test out his new idea on a nice long run. I’m not sure how many runs were ever made in these particular shoes, but the value of these shoes is priceless. I believe the Waffle Trainer sits in a bulletproof case at the Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon.
